A Guide to Before, During & After Flood

The flood season has arrived and whether we like it or not, being prepared beforehand is always the safest and wisest idea for ourselves and our families. Currently, Johor is facing a challenging time and we weren’t expecting such disaster happening to us and to our cities. Not to forget the emotional distress that comes along with it. We are sending love and support to the people affected. Here is a guide to help you with the procedures to follow before, during and after a flood.

Before

✅ Know your flood risk.

✅ Build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan.

✅ Build or restock your emergency preparedness kit, including a flashlight, batteries, cash, and first aid supplies.

✅ Elevate the furnace, water heater and electric panel in your home if you live in an area that has a high flood risk.

✅ Consider installing “check valves” to prevent flood water from backing up into the drains of your home.

✅ If feasible, construct barriers to stop floodwater from entering the building and seal walls in basements with waterproofing compounds.

During

✅ Stay tuned to radio, TV or the internet for weather updates, emergency instructions, or evacuation orders.

✅ If time permits, move furniture and other items to upper floors.

✅ Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if instructed to do so. Disconnect electrical appliances. In the case of flash flooding, do not wait for instructions. Move immediately to higher ground.

✅  Do not move through moving water if at all possible. Use a stick to insure the ground is firm.

✅ Do not drive in flooded areas. Vehicles can quickly be swept away.

✅ Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.

After

✅ Return home only when authorities say it is safe.

✅ Clean and disinfect anything that has come in contact with flood water.

✅ Be aware of areas where floodwaters have receded and watch out for debris. Floodwaters often erode roads and walkways.

✅ Do not attempt to drive through areas that are still flooded.

✅ Avoid standing water as it may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines.

✅ Photograph damage to your property for insurance purposes.

Nature disasters are unpredictable and we tend to think such disasters won’t happen to us until it happens to us. Stay wise and always be prepared. And don’t forget to offer a helping hand for those who are affected by the flood!
