Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that the forthcoming meeting of the national cost of living action council (Naccol) will prioritize discussions on price controls for rice. The decision comes amidst growing concerns over the affordability of this staple food item for Malaysian households.
Scheduled for next week, the Naccol meeting aims to address the pressing issue of rice pricing in the country. Anwar emphasized the significance of this matter, stating that it necessitates thorough deliberation before any decisions are made.

“We are postponing the Naccol meeting to next week, where we will decide on the controlled price for rice,” Anwar stated, underscoring the importance of finding a balance between affordability for consumers and fair returns for suppliers.
Acknowledging the complexities involved, Anwar highlighted the need to scrutinize the rice supply chain, including the roles of contractors and potential avenues for reducing costs. He also cautioned against profiteering by middlemen, emphasizing the importance of ensuring fair pricing mechanisms.
The government’s recent announcement regarding the introduction of Malaysia Madani white rice at regulated prices is a step towards addressing these concerns. Set to be available from March 1st, this initiative aims to provide consumers with affordable options while curbing manipulative practices within the rice market.

According to Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, chairman of Naccol’s food prices committee, the Malaysia Madani white rice will be priced at RM30 for a 10kg sack, with 5kg sack of Malaysia Madani white rice will be set at RM15.50 while a 1kg bag of rice will be priced at RM3.50.
This move seeks to streamline the rice market by eliminating distinctions between local and imported varieties, thereby enhancing transparency and consumer confidence.
As discussions continue, stakeholders anticipate comprehensive measures to ensure equitable access to this vital commodity, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by Malaysian households in meeting their basic needs.
