In a recent announcement, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has assured Malaysians that they can expect more affordable broadband services after September. The MCMC revealed that access agreements with retail broadband service providers are currently being finalized, and prices will be reviewed once these agreements are in place.
To facilitate the negotiation process, most service providers have already published or are in the process of publishing a reference access offer (RAO). The RAO serves as a crucial starting point for the negotiations of access agreements.
The MCMC expects that the negotiations will be concluded by the end of September. Following this, a reduction in the prices of broadband services can be anticipated. This news comes in response to concerns raised by technology news portal SoyaCincau, which questioned the lack of price revisions for broadband services despite the implementation of the Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing on March 1.
In addition to standardizing broadband access prices, the government has introduced the “Pakej Perpaduan” initiative. This initiative offers an affordable internet package specifically targeting youths, individuals in the B40 group, and residents living in People’s Housing Projects and public housing projects, among others. It aims to ensure that everyone has access to affordable and reliable internet connectivity.

The MCMC remains committed to promoting accessibility and affordability in the broadband sector. By finalizing access agreements and revising prices, they aim to create a more inclusive digital landscape that benefits all Malaysians. As September approaches, individuals can eagerly anticipate the availability of cheaper broadband services, enabling them to stay connected and empowered in the digital era.
