What Went Down? REMEMBERING MH370

Nine years have passed. We will likely never know the mystery behind Malaysian Airlines Flight (MAS) MH370. The Boeing 777 plane that captivated the world’s attention by disappearing first took off from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on 8th March 2014, Saturday at 12:42 a.m. local time. The flight, known as MH370 under the Malaysian Airlines code was scheduled to arrive at the Beijing Capital International Airport around 6:30 a.m. but disappeared from radar at 1:21 a.m. Remembering back at what is considered as one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history, let us have a look at the timeline of the MH370 tragedy.

1) Flight MH370 departed at 12.41am on 8th March 2014 from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and supposed to arrive at Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) at 6.30am (local time).

2) The first flight of MH370 was on 14 May 2002. The aircraft recorded a total flight time of 53,465 hours with 7,525 flight cycles.

3) The search for MH370 is one of the most expensive in the history of aviation involving a cost of US$200 million (RM837.47 million) involving 120,000 square meters of the search location.

4) The plane was carrying 239 passengers and crew. They consist of 153 passengers from China, 38 from Malaysia, while the other 36 passengers were from 12 different countries.

5) Jan 29 – Director General of the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman declared MH370 as an accident, according to the Standards of Annexes 12 and 13 of the Chicago Convention, and all 239 passengers and crew of MH370 were presumed to have perished.

6) June 18 – Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Malaysia will continue the second phase of the MH370 search mission involving only two ships in a remote area of ​​the Indian Ocean. The first phase ended in the same month with the search area covering over 52,000 square kilometres.

7) July 29 – A beach cleaning person at the Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean found a fragment of a 2.7 meter long wing called a ‘Flaperon’ which experts believe belonged to a Boeing 777. In this case, MH370 is the only Boeing aircraft reported missing in the Indian Ocean.

8) 6 August – The Prime Minister at that time, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak confirmed that the flaperon found on Reunion Island was from the missing MH370 aircraft.

9) Sept 3 – French investigation team confirmed the aircraft flaperon found on July 29 belonged to MH370, based on a serial number that matched the records of a Spanish company that manufactured the flaperon parts.

10) Sept 5 – Malaysia announced it will continue the search mission in the area of ​​flight MH370 said to be missing in the Indian Ocean.

11) Sept 29 – Malaysia, China and Australia confirmed at a tripartite meeting in Beijing that they remain committed to tracking the location of MH370.

12) March 31 – The Ocean Shield ship begins the search for the black box of flight MH370 in the Indian Ocean.

13) Oct 5 – The Ocean Phoenix ship begun the search for the black box of flight MH370 in the Indian Ocean.

14) Dec 9 – The third ship, Havila Harmony, joined the mission to search for the aircraft MH370 in a remote area in the southern Indian Ocean involving more than 75,000 square kilometres of seabed area.

15) 2018 – The Ocean Infinity ship conducted search efforts in the Indian Ocean seabed.
