Grab Malaysia Boosts Johor’s Economy with Technology

Grab Malaysia: Driving Growth and Empowering Johor Through Technology

Since its debut in Johor in 2013, Grab Malaysia has played a transformative role in the state’s development. By empowering nearly 100,000 local drivers and delivery partners—including over 400 persons with disabilities (PWDs) and more than 3,000 women—Grab has become a platform for opportunity. In 2023 alone, Johor-based Grab partners earned an impressive RM500 million!

Supporting Johor’s Vision for Growth

Grab’s efforts align perfectly with Johor’s “Rakyat” initiative, which aims to establish the state as Malaysia’s next economic powerhouse. Speaking at the recent “Sembang TechTarik” event, JJ Tan, Grab Malaysia’s Commercial and Deliveries Director, emphasized how the company supports micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

“We’ve seen a 4% year-on-year growth in Johor, with over half of our merchants earning five-star ratings,” Tan said. Grab provides local businesses with the tools to thrive, increasing their visibility and connecting them with millions of customers. But it’s about more than just business—it’s about celebrating Johor’s rich culture and fostering a vibrant community.

Enhancing Tourism and Convenience

Here’s a fun fact: 65% of foreign tourists in Malaysia use the Grab app during their travels. To make their experience even better, Grab introduced the Grab Tourist Pack. For just RM3.50, visitors can enjoy savings of up to RM65 on rides, food, and deliveries.

This isn’t just convenient for travelers; it also helps local businesses grow by boosting sales and visibility—a win-win for all.

Real Stories of Growth

  • Nurfarra Aiza balanced part-time Grab driving with her studies, eventually purchasing her own car. Today, she’s pursuing a PhD while continuing to earn through Grab.
  • Her father, Ahmad Farish, left manufacturing for a more flexible career with Grab, successfully managing his finances and improving his quality of life.
  • Local businesses like Nasi Ayam Resipi Abah Original Ipoh and the iconic Restoran Hua Mui saw their sales skyrocket after embracing GrabFood, with increases of up to 107%.

Grab Malaysia isn’t just about technology—it’s about uplifting communities, driving tourism, and supporting Johor’s journey toward becoming an economic powerhouse. And this is just the beginning!
