Choi recounted how her mother used to take her to a western diner after ballet lessons when she was younger. What was once a joyful memory has become a bittersweet one as she matured.
“My family wasn’t rich, but my mum would let me order food there. While I happily ate, my mum would only have a few bites from my plate,” the 41-year-old said, tears welling up in her eyes.
Choi expressed deep regret for not being more considerate as a child. “I would think about why I didn’t notice this when I was young? I was so focused on myself that I didn’t realize my mum didn’t order anything for herself. I never even thought to say, ‘You should eat too,’” she added.
Despite their modest means, Choi’s parents always showered her with love and affection. In an interview with Hong Kong media, Choi, who is part of the Cantopop duo Twins, recalled another instance that demonstrated her parents’ sacrifices. She wanted to perm her hair, but her dad insisted they couldn’t afford it. However, she eventually got the money and later discovered that her dad had pawned his gold chain to fund her salon visit.
These experiences have profoundly impacted Choi, teaching her to treat her parents better and be more mindful of her spending. She now strives to be more thrifty and live within her means, always remembering the sacrifices her parents made for her.
