South Korea is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic entertainers. Lee Soon-jae — a beloved actor whose career shaped the nation’s theatre, TV, and film industries for nearly seven decades — has passed away at the age of 91, his family confirmed today.
Lee wasn’t just an actor; he was a cultural pillar. According to Yonhap News Agency, he remained active on stage and screen until late last year, earning a reputation as one of South Korea’s most respected and versatile performers.
From North Korea to National Icon
Born in 1934 in Hoeryong (now in North Korea), Lee moved to Seoul at just four years old. While studying at Seoul National University, he discovered his passion for acting — a decision that led to his stage debut in 1956 with the play Beyond the Horizon. And the rest, as many Koreans would say, became history.

A Career Filled With Milestones
Throughout his career, Lee starred in around 140 TV dramas, including the hit series What on Earth Is Love (1991–1992), which famously hit 65% viewership. That’s a number most TV shows today can only dream of.
He even found renewed fame later in life through:
- High Kick! (2006)
- High Kick Through the Roof (2009)
- Grandpas Over Flowers (2013)
In his 80s, Lee continued taking on major theatre roles, including a standout performance in King Lear (2021).
A Legacy Beyond Entertainment
Lee stepped away from acting in October last year due to health concerns, but not before becoming the oldest award recipient at the 2024 KBS Drama Awards. He also briefly served in politics, winning a parliamentary seat in 1992.
Lee Soon-jae leaves behind a legacy that has shaped generations — and one that will continue inspiring new talent for years to come.
