In a shocking twist, Downey is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe not as Iron Man, but as the villain Doctor Doom in an upcoming Avengers movie. Downey, who originally launched Marvel’s movie success with Iron Man, appeared on stage wearing Dr. Doom’s mask and a green cloak, quipping, “New mask, same task,” to the delight of the audience.
Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, opened the panel by celebrating the success of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which has already broken records and helped the MCU surpass $30 billion in box-office earnings. To mark the occasion, a choir performed Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.”
Feige announced future MCU plans, revealing that Ford will play a significant role in the next Captain America film. The upcoming Avengers films, titled “Avengers: Secret Wars” and “Avengers: Doomsday,” will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. The panel also introduced the cast of “Captain America: Brave New World,” including Giancarlo Esposito, who will play the villain Sidewinder.
Fans were treated to a sneak peek of “Brave New World,” showcasing Harrison Ford’s character, President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, transforming into the Red Hulk. Ford joined the stage to the crowd’s cheers.
The “Thunderbolts” cast also made a surprise appearance, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and David Harbour sharing details about their characters. The film is set for a May 2025 release.
The panel concluded with exciting news about “The Fantastic Four,” starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Filming begins in London, with the movie scheduled to hit theaters in July 2025. The film’s title, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” was unveiled in a video by director Matt Shakman.
Marvel’s presence at Comic-Con also included a special panel for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which premiered to enthusiastic fans and set a new record for Thursday preview ticket sales. The film’s success has reinvigorated Marvel’s box-office performance after a slow 2023, proving that the superhero franchise is still going strong.
