The Plot: When “Cancelling” Becomes A Hostage Crisis

The story follows one citizen. He wants to end his monthly TV service. However, the cancellation process is absurdly hard. Therefore, he storms the TV station with a knife. He demands to meet the boss.

Soon, the trap closes in on him. The film drags customer service staff, police, and executives into the chaos. Thus, a simple errand becomes a full hostage crisis. Everyone loses control, and the farce heads toward a ridiculous ending.

The True Story: The 2014 “Cable-Cutting Knife Case”

The film draws inspiration from a real 2014 case. Back then, a subscriber faced endless cancellation hurdles. As a result, he grew furious and stormed the TV station with a knife. The incident even caused injuries.

Director Mak Tin-shu rewrote this “cable-cutting blood and tears story” into a hostage crisis. Moreover, he built a vivid group portrait. Therefore, the film works as a sharp social microcosm.

Award-Winning Cast: A Golden-Horse Powerhouse

๐Ÿ† Michael Pai (Golden Horse Best Supporting Actor)

He plays front-line role Choi Chin-wai (Ringo). His heavy screen time anchors the whole farce.

๐Ÿ‘‘ Fish Liew (New HK Best Actress)

She plays Lucky, a slow-reflexed otaku colleague. For the role, she dyed her hair blue and bleached her eyebrows.

๐ŸŽญ Tse Kwan-ho (Golden Horse Best Actor)

He plays the Happy TV boss. Interestingly, he was the first actor approached for the “victim” Tak-chai role.

๐ŸŒŸ Nina Paw (HK Best Actress)

She joins Rachel Leung, Mak Pui-tung, Tai Yu-kei, and more to complete this absurd ensemble.

Director Mak Tin-shu: The Real Story Is The Pressure Behind The Absurdity

Mak Tin-shu won the Golden Horse Best Screenplay award for Trivisa. This film marks his first solo writing and directing work. Moreover, the English title Dog Day Evening pays homage to Sidney Lumet’s classic Dog Day Afternoon.

“When I first saw the incident, I thought it was too exaggerated and too funny. However, the more I thought about it, the more I felt the real story was the life pressure behind the absurd event. When a person is pushed to the limit, a tiny matter often snaps their sanity.”

First Lead For Tai Yu-kei (Yukki): Cheung Kam-ching As Acting Coach

Newcomer Tai Yu-kei (Yukki) carries the whole film. In fact, this is his heaviest role yet. When he learned he got the lead, he felt more excited than nervous on set.

According to the end credits, veteran Cheung Kam-ching served as Yukki’s acting coach. To show Tak-chai’s tension during the hostage scene, Yukki ran laps outside before shooting. Therefore, he entered the frame out of breath with a racing heart.

“I had almost no work during the pandemic. I felt I could represent Tak-chai’s age group. We just went through this feeling. So I linked that state directly to Tak-chai. It is even a collective memory. I think not just Hong Kong, but the whole world entered a turning point in these years. It changed all our life habits.”

Why You Can’t Laugh Till The End: A Social Microcosm

Critics call it “a film that belongs to Hong Kong people.” The customer service hell and recorded phone responses are familiar collective memories. You may think it only tells an old cancellation story. However, that view underestimates Mak Tin-shu.

The film hides sharp social observation under absurd laughs. Therefore, many viewers say they “cannot laugh till the end.” They see themselves while laughing. This is the film’s most touching part.
