What’s New? Fresh Food On The List

If approved, the expansion will add three nutritious groups. Therefore, recipients will enjoy a more balanced diet.

🍎 Fresh Fruits

Currently, SARA does not cover fresh fruits. After the expansion, recipients may buy apples, bananas, oranges, and more.

🥬 Vegetables

Fresh vegetables will join the list. As a result, families can cook healthier daily meals.

🍗 Protein Sources

Meat, poultry, and fish may become eligible. Thus, vulnerable groups will get better nutrition.

🍚 Rice Subsidy Soft Landing

The committee also studied a “soft landing” for the white rice subsidy. This plan will protect vulnerable groups during any adjustment.

“Government aid should not only raise purchasing power. It must also improve access to healthy and nutritious food.”

— Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Deputy Prime Minister

“We cannot view the cost of living only from supermarket shelf prices. We must address it comprehensively — from production costs, supply chains, food affordability, healthcare, education, and protection of the vulnerable.”

— Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi

What Can You Buy Now? 15 Categories, 140,000 Items

Today, SARA covers 15 categories of essentials. In total, over 140,000 items qualify. The list includes:

  • 🍚 White rice, flour, bread, and biscuits
  • 🥫 Canned food, instant noodles, and seasonings

📍 Selangor Leads

Selangor has the most recipients at 1.2 million. Johor and Sarawak follow with 942,000 each.
