Sarawak Haze Deepens: 6 Areas Record Unhealthy API Levels
[KUCHING] The Sarawak haze has worsened significantly. On August 20, six areas in the state recorded unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) levels. Serian logged the highest reading at 191. Meanwhile, thousands of wildfires in Kalimantan continue to fuel this cross-border smoke.
Six districts in Sarawak have crossed the 100-point API threshold. Vulnerable groups must stay indoors!
The Sarawak Haze: Six Areas Enter Unhealthy Levels
According to the Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), the air quality deteriorated rapidly. Serian led the list with an API of 191. Furthermore, Kuching, Samarahan, Sarikei, Sri Aman, and Bintulu also crossed the 100-point threshold. Therefore, these six areas officially entered the “unhealthy” category. Authorities urge residents to limit outdoor activities immediately.
Kalimantan Wildfires: Over 7,200 Hotspots Fuel The Smoke
The root cause of the severe Sarawak haze lies across the border. The ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Centre) and Dayak Daily reported a massive surge in fires. Kalimantan logged a staggering 7,286 hotspots on August 20. Additionally, Sarawak itself detected 148 local hotspots. Consequently, prevailing southerly winds push this thick, toxic smoke directly into Malaysian territory.
MetMalaysia Outlook: Temporary Relief Before Haze Returns
Is there any good news? MetMalaysia noted that recent damp weather provided temporary relief. The rain helped wash away some pollutants in the Klang Valley and parts of Borneo. However, officials warn that this reprieve is short-lived. Because the dry season and El Niño effects persist, the thick smoke will likely return in the coming days. Thus, citizens must remain vigilant.
Health Warnings And Protective Measures
The Department of Health advises the public to take immediate precautions. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and asthma patients, face the highest risks.
Standard surgical masks do not filter PM2.5 particles. Always wear an N95 mask when stepping outside.
Block outdoor smoke by keeping doors and windows tightly shut. Use air purifiers indoors.
Avoid strenuous physical activities outside. Heavy breathing pulls more toxic particles into your lungs.
Drink plenty of water to help your body flush out toxins and soothe throat irritation.
