Taiwanese actress Ning Chang recently visited Malaysia to promote her latest film, A Place Called Silence, which was filmed in the picturesque setting of Penang.
During a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, Chang couldn’t help but rave about the local cuisine, calling it one of the highlights of her time on set. “Penang has so many delicious foods!” she enthused. “I could eat laksa day and night. After every shoot, I would just indulge!”
Among her favorite dishes were laksa, cendol, and fried kueh teow, which she admitted to enjoying without much concern for her waistline. When asked if she worried about gaining weight, Chang smiled and explained that her role in the movie kept her constantly active. “Even though I eat a lot, I burn off all the calories during filming, so I eat as much as I want,” the 41-year-old actress shared.
- A Place Called Silence* is directed by Malaysian filmmaker Sam Quah, who also happens to be Chang’s boyfriend. Their relationship, which has been the subject of speculation since their collaboration on the 2015 film Detective Chinatown, was confirmed by Chang in December last year. However, she mentioned that due to her busy schedule, she has yet to meet Quah’s family. When asked about wedding plans, she simply said, “There’s no news yet. I hope everyone watches our movie first.”
The film, which centers on the harrowing experience of a mute high school student named Yutong (played by Angela Wang), has been a hit at the box office. A Place Called Silence has already grossed RM1 million in Malaysia since its release on August 8, and it’s the second-highest-grossing summer film of 2024 in China, earning RM806 million so far.
