Malaysia’s Covid-19 Cases Almost Double in a Week, Health Officials Vigilant

The battle against Covid-19 continues as Malaysia witnesses a significant surge in cases over the past two weeks. In the 48th Epidemiological Week (ME48/2023), the reported cases escalated from 3,626 to 6,796, marking a worrying increase in the prevalence of the virus.

Health director-general Datuk Dr. Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan reported that the rise in cases is part of a global trend, echoing the annual spike observed towards the end of each year. The health official reassured the public that, as of ME48/2023, no new variants have been detected in Malaysia, and the existing variants, including the Omicron variant, have not shown increased infectiousness or severity.

Despite the surge, Malaysia’s healthcare facilities remain under control, with Covid-19 patient admissions at manageable levels. Dr. Radzi emphasized the importance of preventive measures, urging the public to maintain personal hygiene, practice handwashing, and follow the TRIIS protocol (Test, Report, Isolate, Inform, and Seek) if symptomatic.

In the latest update for the week ending Dec 9, Dr. Radzi disclosed that Covid-19 cases have nearly doubled, reaching 12,757. However, the majority of these cases exhibit mild symptoms and do not require hospitalization. This underscores the importance of continued vigilance and adherence to safety protocols to curb the spread of the virus.

The health director-general advised symptomatic individuals, especially high-risk groups, to promptly consult with a doctor if symptoms worsen.

As the Ministry of Health (MOH) remains steadfast in monitoring the evolving situation, Malaysians are encouraged to play their part by staying informed, practicing preventive measures, and seeking medical attention when needed. The fight against Covid-19 is a collective effort, and adherence to safety measures is crucial to overcoming the challenges posed by the virus.
