In the midst of a notable surge in Covid-19 cases, Malaysia has recorded a 62.2% increase, bringing the total to 20,696 cases between December 10 and December 16. Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad addressed the public’s concerns during a press conference, emphasizing that while the numbers are rising, there is currently no plan to implement a Movement Control Order (MCO).
During the briefing, Minister Dzulkefly highlighted that 97% of the cases presented mild symptoms and did not require hospitalization. However, 151 individuals were admitted to the intensive care unit, with 96 requiring respiratory assistance. Over the past week, 28 deaths were reported, primarily among patients aged 60 and above, along with those with pre-existing health conditions.

Minister Dzulkefly assured the public that the Ministry of Health is well-prepared to handle a potential surge in hospitalizations. Adequate staff, supplies, and equipment are in place to provide sufficient care in case of an influx of patients. He encouraged individuals experiencing symptoms to undergo testing promptly and consult with doctors for antiviral treatment if eligible.
While the country experiences a rise in Covid-19 cases, Minister Dzulkefly emphasized that there are currently no plans for a repeat of the MCO imposed during the initial stages of the pandemic. The Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and urged the public to remain vigilant, emphasizing the importance of wearing masks in crowded places and practicing good hygiene.
Health Director-General Dr. Radzi Abu Hassan reassured the public about the availability of vaccines, stating that there is an ample supply, especially for individuals with underlying health conditions. For those interested in booster shots, he mentioned a convenient “walk-in” option for inoculation. Dr. Radzi also confirmed that thermal body scanners at airports are monitoring tourist arrivals, with no new variants detected at present. As the situation evolves, health authorities are committed to managing the surge effectively without the need for restrictive measures at this time.
