Beware: Scammers Posing as Anti-Scam Officers on the Rise

In a concerning trend, scammers have taken on a new guise by posing as personnel from the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), according to recent reports from the police.

Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf, director of the Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department, revealed that 18 investigation papers have been opened in connection with such cases from January to February 11 this year.

Victims of this scam typically receive calls from individuals claiming affiliation with the NSRC. These fraudulent callers then proceed to deceive victims with elaborate stories, often alleging involvement in illegal activities online.

One victim, a 61-year-old former lecturer, reported a staggering loss of RM1.43 million to an individual posing as an NSRC officer. This highlights the substantial financial impact these scams can have on unsuspecting individuals.

Comm Ramli emphasized that the NSRC operates solely as a response center and does not initiate outbound calls under any circumstances. He warned the public to remain vigilant, urging individuals not to fall prey to such tactics.

“It’s important to recognize that if someone claiming to be from the NSRC contacts you, they are likely attempting to deceive you,” Comm Ramli cautioned.

To combat these fraudulent activities, the public is encouraged to report any suspicious incidents to the NSRC by dialing 997.

As scams evolve and perpetrators become increasingly sophisticated, it’s crucial for individuals to exercise caution and skepticism when receiving unexpected calls or messages, especially regarding sensitive financial matters. Stay informed and stay safe.
