Taiwan-Based Malaysian Singer Freya Lim Celebrates Dragon Boat Festival in Penang

Taiwan-based Malaysian singer Freya Lim recently made a heartwarming visit to her late father’s hometown in Penang to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival with her extended family. During her stay, she fully embraced the local culture and flavors.

In an Instagram post, Lim shared delightful snapshots of the local delicacies she enjoyed, such as satay, prawn noodles, and various Nyonya dishes. She also took the opportunity to explore Penang’s famous tourist spots with her Taiwanese mother, including the Chayamangkalaram Thai Buddhist temple, Pinang Peranakan Mansion, Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, and Lee Jetty.

“Returning to dad’s hometown filled with sunshine and delicious food! Missing Penang,” the 44-year-old singer captioned her post, reflecting her deep connection to her roots.

In another Instagram update, Lim shared a special moment when she heard her song playing near the Lee Jetty in George Town. She posted a video of the unexpected encounter, writing, “Is this Penang’s way of welcoming me? Some random old radio playing my song while we’re visiting the Lee Jetty in Penang. What a surprise,” capturing her joy and surprise.

Freya Lim’s journey in music began in 1999 when her talent was discovered by music producer Benjamin Lin, who heard her sing Sandy Lam’s “Night’s Too Dark” at a karaoke joint. A year later, she released her debut album, “Freya,” which was a huge success. The album sold over 120,000 copies in Taiwan and stayed on the music charts for more than six months. This achievement earned her the Best Newcomer award at the 2001 Singapore Hit Awards and a nomination at the 2001 Golden Melody Awards.

Freya Lim’s recent visit to Penang not only rekindled her connection with her heritage but also delighted her fans, showcasing her love for her hometown and its vibrant culture.
