Taylor Swift, the American pop sensation, is the artist who brings the most joy to Singaporeans, while Mandopop star Jay Chou tops the list of artists whose music evokes sadness. This insight comes from an online survey of 1,502 Singaporeans conducted by Preply, a US-based online language learning platform.

According to the survey, 23.6% of respondents feel the happiest listening to Swift’s music. Following her are Maroon 5, K-pop group Blackpink, Jay Chou, and Singaporean Mandopop singer JJ Lin. On the other hand, 19.5% of those surveyed said Jay Chou’s music makes them feel the saddest, with Swift, Lin, Taiwanese singer Eric Chou, and British singer Adele also mentioned.
When it comes to music that stirs up anger, Linkin Park leads with 14.1% of respondents, followed by Eminem, Metallica, Swift, and Kanye West. For evoking feelings of love, Swift is again on top with 25.9%, followed by Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Jay Chou, and JJ Lin.
Preply, founded in 2012, conducted this survey in June with a diverse demographic to ensure it accurately represented the population.
In March, Taylor Swift attracted over 300,000 fans during her six sold-out shows at Singapore’s National Stadium. Her previous performances in Singapore were at the much smaller Indoor Stadium in 2011, 2014, and 2015. In 2023, she was the most-streamed artist among local Spotify users, with her albums “Midnights,” “Lover,” and “1989” making the top albums list. Swift was also the top artist on Apple Music, which named her 2023’s Artist of the Year, with her songs “Anti-Hero” and “Cruel Summer” among the top ten most streamed by Singaporeans.
Jay Chou, the third most-streamed artist on local Spotify, will perform sold-out shows at the National Stadium from October 11 to 13 as part of his Carnival World Tour.
