HK Actress Anita Yuen Relishes Durian & Lok-Lok During Malaysia Shoot

Hong Kong actress Anita Yuen recently visited Malaysia in July to work on her upcoming film, Mum’s Big News. While she was there, the 53-year-old couldn’t resist diving into Malaysia’s famous culinary scene.

In a recent interview with Sin Chew Daily, Yuen shared that the very first thing she did after arriving was to indulge in durian, a fruit she’s grown to enjoy. She also experienced asam laksa for the first time. “I really wanted to visit the night market, but my crew wouldn’t let me. It’s not that I wanted to roam around—I just wanted to eat! Some dishes need to be hot and spicy to be truly delicious,” she explained. Yuen, who is married to Hong Kong singer-actor Julian Cheung, clearly has a passion for bold flavors.

The trip, however, came with some indulgent consequences. Yuen admitted she put on some weight during her stay, joking about how she struggled to fit into her favorite pants. “There’s this pair I used to button up so easily, but now I have to hold my breath to get them on!”

Yuen also had fun on set, thanks to the presence of lok-lok trucks, which serve an array of skewered treats. She loved them so much, she’s hoping to bring the concept to Hong Kong. “I think Hong Kong’s nightlife could really use some lok-lok trucks. They offer such variety—soups, fried foods. Both adults and kids love it!”

Yuen’s upcoming film, Mum’s Big News, centers on her character Rita Wong, a woman who unexpectedly becomes pregnant while planning for retirement with her husband. The movie is slated for release during Chinese New Year in 2025 and features several Malaysian actors, including Chan Fong, Tong Bing Yu, Juztin Lan, and Miko Wong.
