Government Expands Vehicle Scrapping Grant: Proposes RM1,000 Motorcycle Trade-In Subsidy
[NEGERI SEMBILAN] Great news for bikers! The government is considering expanding the existing vehicle scrapping programme. Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook revealed that the government is exploring a new motorcycle trade-in grant. Therefore, citizens who scrap their old motorcycles and buy new ones could receive a RM1,000 subsidy per vehicle.
This initiative aims to encourage the public to retire aging vehicles. Furthermore, it will ease the financial burden on the B40 group while significantly improving national road safety.
The RM1,000 Motorcycle Trade-In Grant Proposal
Loke Siew Fook officially announced this news during a speech in Negeri Sembilan. He pointed out that this motorcycle trade-in grant is currently in the proposal stage. Moreover, he will hold in-depth discussions with the Ministry of Transport Secretary-General next week. Thus, the government will finalize the implementation details and application conditions very soon.
Existing RM4,000 Car Scrapping Incentive
In fact, the government previously launched a scrapping incentive for cars. Under the Budget 2026, owners of vehicles aged 20 years and older can receive up to RM4,000 if they scrap their old cars and buy new national cars. This includes a RM2,000 government matching grant and a RM2,000 discount from automakers. Therefore, extending this to motorcycles will benefit more lower-income citizens who rely on two-wheeled transport.

Why is the government expanding this programme? Loke emphasized that encouraging the public to scrap old motorcycles and buy new ones does more than just ease financial burdens. It also drastically improves road safety. Old motorcycles often lack modern safety features like ABS (Anti-lock Braking Systems), and aging parts easily cause breakdowns. Consequently, this measure plays a vital role in reducing traffic accidents.
