Initially, whispers in the tech world hinted at the release of the PS5 Pro alongside a sleeker version of the PS5 back in 2023. However, as we’ve seen, things didn’t quite unfold as anticipated. The highly anticipated ‘PS5 Slim’ took the stage, replacing the original PS5 from 2020 as the standard model. Since then, Sony has kept mum about the PS5 Pro. But with industry insiders eyeing the next generation of gaming consoles by 2028, enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a ‘Pro’ variant for the PlayStation 5.

Thanks to the latest leaks, we now have a glimpse of what the PS5 Pro might offer. While details about its design remain scarce, leaked specifications hint at significant improvements in performance. But does that warrant putting your decision to purchase the PS5 Slim Edition on hold this season?

Sony PS5 vs PS5 Pro: What to Expect

Let’s dive into the key differences between the rumored PS5 Pro and the current-gen PS5 model.

Performance Boost: The Power of Ray Tracing

One of the standout features from the leaked data on the PS5 Pro is its enhanced computing power. According to reports, the PS5 Pro is expected to boast a whopping 33.5 teraflops of computing power, eclipsing the existing PS5’s 10.28 teraflops. This surge in power even outshines the Xbox Series X’s 12 teraflops. Additionally, the PS5 Pro is rumored to feature a more intricate architecture, potentially leveraging a new AMD RDNA architecture for substantial gains in ray tracing performance, up to three times that of the current model.

While the CPU remains unchanged, Sony is reportedly introducing a new High CPU Frequency Mode for a temporary processing speed boost, albeit at the expense of slower GPU processing.

In essence, while the PS5 Pro promises significant performance upgrades, whether it’s worth the wait depends on your gaming priorities and appetite for cutting-edge technology. With the gaming landscape evolving rapidly, the decision ultimately boils down to whether you’re willing to hold out for the potential enhancements the PS5 Pro might bring to the table.
