With the release of highly acclaimed video games like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Persona 3 Reload, 2024 has started off strong for gamers everywhere, especially those who love enormous open world RPGs. However, the year has just started and there are even more exciting games scheduled to release this month. For fans of Dark Souls, Fire Emblem or Super Mario, here are 6 games releasing in March that might appeal to you.
Unicorn Overlord – (PS4/PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S), March 8
Unicorn Overlord is a tactical fantasy RPG set on the continent of Fevrith, where you play as exiled prince Alain as he recruits companions to take back his kingdom from the Zenoiran Empire led by General Valmore.
Alongside an freely traversable world and unit customization, one of Unicorn Overlord’s biggest selling points is that has online mode, which allows players to fight against other players with their own assembled teams. The game is also developed by Vanillaware, creators behind 2019’s beloved real-time strategy science fiction game 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim.
Unicorn Overlord will release on March 8, 2024.
Alone in the Dark – (PS5, PC, Xbox Series X/S), March 20
Described as a “re-imagination” of the original 1992 video game of the same name, Alone in the Dark is a survival horror game set in Derceto Manor, a home for the mentally fatigued. The story follows Emily Hartwood and private investigator Edward Carnby, played by Jodie Comer (Killing Eve, Free Guy) and David Harbour (Stranger Things, Black Widow) respectively.
Instead of the fixed camera angles of the original, the remake will feature an “over-the-shoulder” third-person perspective, similar to the recent Resident Evil remakes, which released to unanimous praise.
Alone in the Dark will release on March 20, 2024.
Dragon’s Dogma II – (PS5, PC, Xbox Series X/S), March 22
Dragon’s Dogma II is a sequel to Dragon’s Dogma, originally released in 2012, developed by Capcom. Here’s an excerpt about the game, according to its official website:
“Dragon’s Dogma is a single player, narrative driven action-RPG that challenges players to choose their own experience – from the appearance of their Arisen, their vocation, their party, how to approach different situations and more. On your journey, you’ll be joined by Pawns, mysterious otherworldly beings, in an adventure so unique you will feel as if accompanied by other players while on your own adventure. All of these elements are elevated further by physics technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and the latest in graphics, made possible with RE Engine to create a truly immersive fantasy world in Dragon’s Dogma 2.”
Dragon’s Dogma will release on March 22, 2024.
Princess Peach: Showtime! – (Nintendo Switch), March 22
For the first time since 2005, Princess Peach, one of the main characters of the Super Mario series, will be the protagonist in her own game titled Princess Peach: Showtime! In it, players will help the titular princess “save the Sparkle Theater from the wicked Grape and the Sour Bunch, who have set the stage for the ultimate tragedy.”
The main mechanic of the game sees Princess Peach switch outfits as well as occupations. Each change will also shift the gameplay elements, such as Ninja Peach introducing stealth and Cowboy Peach being supplied with a lasso and a horse.
Princess Peach: Showtime! will also release on March 22, 2024.
South Park: Snow Day! – (PS5, Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox Series X/S), March 26
South Park: Snow Day! is a video game spinoff of the popular TV show, and continues the journey of the main playable character in South Park: The Stick of Truth, South Park: The Fractured But Whole and South Park: Phone Destroyer. Unlike previous games, however, Snow Day is a 3D third-person action RPG, where players can also cooperate with up to three of their friends or other people online.
Although recent South Park games have been very successful, these were not the first time the show was adapted into interactive media, releasing South Park for the Nintendo 64 all the way back in 1998. The game wasn’t received very well, however, with critics citing poor graphics, poor visuals and bad voice acting.
South Park: Snow Day! will release on March 26, 2024.
Open Roads – (PS4/PS5, Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox Series X/S), March 28
Open Roads is a story-driven adventure game published by Annapurna Interactive about a single mother named Opal and her daughter, Tess, embarking on a road trip that will uncover family secrets as well as a hidden fortune.
Originally developed by Fullbright, developers behind narrative adventure pioneers Gone Home and Tacoma, the game has shifted labels to, instead, being developed by the Open Roads Team after reports about Fullbright founder Steve Gaynor’s alleged toxic behaviour in the workplace came to light.
Open Roads will release on March 28, 2024.
