When choosing between the Google Pixel 8a and the Apple iPhone 15, it’s essential to consider what each phone brings to the table. Both have unique strengths, but which one is the smarter choice for you? Let’s dive into the details to help you decide.

Design and Build

The Google Pixel 8a, priced at $499 (approximately MYR 2,357), shares the same attractive pebble-shaped design as its pricier siblings in the Pixel 8 series. It sports a plastic rear panel and a flatter metal camera bar, giving it a playful and funky look. However, its slightly thicker bezels distinguish it from the higher-end Pixel 8.

In contrast, the iPhone 15 exudes sophistication with its matte rear glass, well-contoured aluminum edges, and lightweight build. The addition of the Dynamic Island gives it a modern touch. Despite its 6.1-inch display, the iPhone 15 feels compact and comfortable to hold, echoing the premium vibe of its predecessors.

Both phones feature 6.1-inch OLED displays with peak brightness levels of 2,000 nits, but their performance varies. The Pixel 8a offers a 120Hz refresh rate and Always On functionality, enhancing user interaction. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15’s display, though capped at 60Hz, excels in color accuracy and durability with its Ceramic Shield glass.

Performance

Under the hood, the Pixel 8a houses Google’s Tensor G3 chipset, promising robust AI-based processing and future-proofing with up to seven years of OS updates. Running on Android 14, it offers a customizable and feature-rich experience.

However, the iPhone 15’s A16 Bionic chip, although a generation older, delivers superior performance, especially for demanding tasks and gaming. Paired with iOS 17, it ensures a smooth, secure, and privacy-focused user experience, backed by Apple’s ecosystem.

The Pixel 8a comes with a dual-camera setup, featuring a 64-megapixel main sensor and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide sensor. Its front camera is a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens. These specs promise great photography, but the iPhone 15 takes it up a notch with its 48-megapixel main sensor and 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens. The front camera is a 12-megapixel sensor with advanced features like Phase Detection Auto Focus and 3D depth mapping.

Winner: iPhone 15

Battery

The Pixel 8a is equipped with a 4,492mAh battery, supporting 18W wired charging and 7.5W wireless charging. The iPhone 15 has a smaller 3,349mAh battery but supports faster charging with Apple’s 20W wired charger and 15W wireless and MagSafe charging. Despite the smaller battery, the iPhone 15’s efficiency means both phones offer similar battery life.

Price in Malaysia

The Pixel 8a is the more affordable option, starting at $499 (MYR 2,357 approx.), and is available in several colors including Bay (blue), Obsidian (black), and Porcelain (white). The iPhone 15, on the other hand, starts at MYR 4,399 and offers a range of vibrant colors like Blue, Pink, Yellow, Green, and Black.

Final Winner: Apple iPhone 15

While the Google Pixel 8a is a fantastic choice for value-conscious buyers, offering generative AI features, solid performance, and a promise of seven years of updates, the iPhone 15 stands out with its superior build quality, performance, and camera capabilities. The iPhone 15 remains a top choice in the premium segment, providing a comprehensive and reliable smartphone experience.
