Namewee Resumes Tour After Year-Long Halt, Performing in Genting This November

Malaysian rapper Namewee is making a comeback after his concert tour was put on hold last year. The artist, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, announced on social media on Sept 10 that his Namewee Big Bird Tour will resume, revealing four new stops for his shows.

At 41, Namewee is set to perform in Melbourne, Australia, on Oct 21; Kaohsiung, Taiwan, on Nov 2; Singapore on Nov 9; and Genting, Malaysia, on Nov 16. Fans can start buying tickets at noon on Sept 12.

According to Taiwanese news portal ETtoday, the tour, which kicked off in Taipei in April 2023, was halted after just one performance, resulting in significant financial losses. The tour had initially been planned to visit 15 cities, including Singapore, Osaka, Paris, Toronto, and Sydney.

Namewee explained on social media that the tour was cut short because his concert partners, who had business ties to China, faced pressure from unnamed sources and chose not to continue working with him.

The rapper has been a controversial figure in China since the release of his 2021 satirical song Fragile, which is believed to criticize Chinese President Xi Jinping and highlight sensitive issues related to China and Taiwan. This led to him being blacklisted in China.
